Canada's Central Bank Digital Currency
The goal of a proper digital currency is to be decentralized so greedy individuals can't corrupt it. Government digital currencies go against this goal.
The Canadian Government will only introduce the CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency) if:
Paper notes decline in supply enough that it becomes difficult to get change
Another digital currency is adopted
For #2, they are making it clear that they don't want the citizens to escape from their central bank grasp. They are referring to Bitcoin here.
The Government of Canada says they are waiting to introduce the CBDC because they are worried criminals will use it for money laundering like they use Bitcoin. But it's a good thing they aren't criminals! Because why would criminals launder money on a fully traceable digital currency like Bitcoin or Canada's Digital Currency? The pro criminals use cash.
The biggest reason you should not use a CBDC over Bitcoin is that for a CBDC, the Central Bank will have complete authority over your money.
Did your favourite brand's CEO say something that some people find rude? Now you can't spend your money at that store anymore.
The Government can already print money without our permission. We should not allow them to be able to print money easier. With a CBDC, they can print new dollars at the click of a mouse; they won't need to use a physical printer anymore.
